What is Alcohol Counseling?

Alcohol counseling takes two primary forms: That which is conducted with a certified or license counselor outside of the clinical setting, and for more severe cases that involve a detoxification, there is the 30 to 90 day in house clinical setting.  As with any substance abuser, the first step in recovery is admitting that there is a problem by the individual with the problem. Once the person has admitted they need help, it should be determined whether or not rehabilitation is needed.

One on one counseling can be done anywhere from a daily basis up to a weekly basis.  There are many recovery programs available offered through religious and non religious organizations. However, the most popular is to have the person become involved in a twelve step program such as that offered by Alcoholics Annoymous. It is recommended that in addition to personal one on one counseling, the affected individual seek out a program that conforms to their personal beliefs in an attempt to find sobriety and remain sober.  Most find that seeking out God or a "Higher Power" helps them in their walk through recovery because they learn that they are helpless over their addiction and need assistance from a power greater than themselves.

In the clinical setting, it may be neccessary for the individual to be placed on medication to help in the withdrawal process, depending on the length and severity of the intoxication. The individual would remain in a 24 hours facility which would probably be equipped with a medical staff to assist in detoxification. Additionally this individual would attend one on one counseling as well as group sessions perscribed as part of their overall therapy.

Whether or not the individual needs outside or in house clinical counseling, regular group therapy is highly recommended and encouraged!

Alcohol Centers

Alcohol Centers are places available for the detoxification and treatment of alcoholics suffering from alcohol dependency and addiction. Those oriented toward detoxification typically offer shorter length stays (10-14 days) coupled with medication therapies to reduce the withdrawal effects of alcohol. Other alcohol centers offer longer term stays that include support therapy and introduction to self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.

Detoxification alone is rarely successful in moderating alcohol consumption because the underlying issues which lead to, and continue to lead to, drinking are not addressed. Because of this, most Alcohol Centers use multiple approaches and recommend complete abstinence after physical dependence is dealt with.

There are many alcohol rehabilitation centers readily available ranging in price, therapy offered, treatment and recovery programs.  They are both religious and non-religious based. Most normally offer a peaceful serene setting such as those located in the mountains or near the ocean so that the individual can use this time in rehabilitation to reconnect with their inner self and discover what were their causes for the alcohol abuse.

Most clinical setting rehabilitation centers offer treatment and detoxification that last anywhere from 10 to 90 days depending on the length and severity of the alcohol abuse. Some individuals find that once they leave their rehabilitation center, it is good for them to be placed in what is known as a half way house.  These homes are group homes and provide some supervision but mostly just a setting for individuals to transition from the rehabilitation back to every day normal life.

Addiction Treatment

Addiction treatment is best known as the beginning of a recovery process that could include in house clincial or outside clinical counseling, possibly medication prescribed to assist with the withdrawal process, introduction to self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous offered and an accountability program and/or partner. Individual psychologists and psychiatrists, short term treatment centers, long term treatment programs, and self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous are all available to individuals needing addiction treatment.

The most successful addiction treatment seems to be combinations of two or more of the previously mentioned options. While there are some addiction treatment programs that recommend harm reduction approaches, most recommend complete abstinence. These programs attempt to address underlying causation and reasons for the alcohol and/or drug abuse. Initial addiction treatment is successful in about 1/3 of cases with another 1/3 or more substantially improved, according to information provided by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 2007.

Breaking the addiction cycle can be successful using the above approach and long term abstinence can be achieved with consistent involvement in self-help groups. Treatment is normally the beginning process on the road to recovery, whereas recovery is an ongoing, life long journey which should be examined and reexamined on a daily basis.

Alcoholism is an illness that, if not controlled and monitored by the individual, can result in relapses. The recovering alcoholic is defined as the person who is clean and sober, and who may or may not be involved in some sort of self help program, who is able to maintain sobriety with or without accountability, one day at a time! Statistics show that the most successful recovering alcohol abusers are those who ARE even mildly involved in a twelve step self help program such as that of Alcoholics Anonymous!

Addiction Rehab

Addiction rehab is the most powerful, effective way to break the cycle of alcohol dependence. These programs are not just a "band-aid" solution – alcohol rehab gets to the heart of why an individual has become addicted and treats these issues at the source. Alcohol rehabilitation is not just a safe haven for the individual going through recovery to retreat to, these facilities offer a process to help the individual overcome their physical and psychological addiction to alcohol. The process begins with detoxification and one on one counseling, followed by group therapy and then finally introduction to an aftercare program.

Alcohol detoxification is the initial part of the recovery process. It starts with detoxing the body of all alcohol.  Many times medication is needed to reduce the painful side effects of the withdrawal symptoms sometimes experienced through this process. These include sweats, chills, irritability, seizures, blackouts, anxiety and depression. Medication doesn't eliminate the withdrawal symptoms, however, it can drastically reduce them. The detox process can last anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks with its peak after a few days!

Counseling involves one on one therapy as well as group sessions. In the individual counseling session with a certified substance abuse therapist, the individual will be prompted to open up and get to the root of why they choose alcohol as their drug of choice to cover their pain. Once that has been determined, they are well on their way to the road to recovery because they learn ways to cope with what causes the pain rather than covering it up with the alcohol. Group therapy is the opportunity for the individual to meet other recovering addicts where they may for the first time feel like they aren't alone.

Aftercare is established once the individual is strong enough to enter back out into the real world. That normally includes ongoing sessions with an individual therapist as well as the introduction to a twelve step program such as Alcoholics Anonymous. Rehabililitation is the beginning process of recovery for the alcohol dependent individual.  Recovery, however, is a life long process that should be taken one day at a time!

There are many alcohol treatment and rehabilitation centers available today for the alcohol dependent individual who is seeking help.  There are a wide variety of treatment centers located in almost every state in the United States, so finding the one that is right for you isn't as hard as it may seem. There are inpatient, outpatient, Christian, non-religious and even adolescent alcohol treatment centers.  Each tailored to meet your specific need.

Through these treatment centers the individual is introduced to two different types of therapy; one on one counseling with a licensed and certified substance abuse counselor as well as group therapy.  In one on one counseling sessions the individual will discover what it is that triggers their particular need to be alcohol dependent and learn healthy ways to cope. The individual is encouraged to change their environment to eliminate daily tempations and to participate in a twelve step program such as that of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Choosing whether the alcohol dependent person needs inpatient or outpatient care is determined on an individual basis by medical staff or counselors, as well as what the individual feels they need or want.  Treatment facilities can offer a safe haven for the recovery process to begin including detoxification from the alcohol if needed.

If you or someone you love is alcohol dependent, now is the time to make a positive change in becoming the person that you and/or your loved ones want and need you to be! There is a treatment center just for you!
